NOLLI: A Difficulty-Calibrated Puzzle Benchmark for Diagnosing the English-Korean Performance Gap

We introduce NOLLI, a procedurally generated English-Korean puzzle benchmark designed to diagnose where Korean performance gaps arise. It comprises 15 puzzle types (25 tasks; 7,500 items), with every instance seed-regenerable, verified to have a unique solution, and scored deterministically. Rather than equating harder with bigger, we calibrate difficulty behaviorally, tuning each generator until a fixed reference model lands in target accuracy bands. Its three-level design combines matched direct translations, script adaptations over Hangul jamo (sub-syllabic letters), and Korean-only tasks grounded in Korean culture or orthography. We evaluate 15 frontier, open-weight, and Korean-developed models; among the 12 above a 3% overall-accuracy floor, matched English-Korean accuracy is statistically equivalent within a +/- 10 pp margin (TOST), suggesting little cost from presentation language alone. Writing-system-intensive tasks show sharper gaps: Korean Cipher falls behind English by up to 68.7 pp, whereas Cryptarithmetic over the same jamo shows no systematic penalty, and Jamo Composition accuracy predicts Korean Cipher accuracy. These contrasts are diagnostic rather than causal, consistent with difficulty in multi-step sub-syllabic execution. Korean-only tasks separate rule-application deficits, which vary in sign, from a Kinship deficit positive in all 12. Finally, a salient size measure fails to grow from Easy to Hard in 7 of 15 types, making structural size an unreliable proxy for empirical difficulty.

GLAN-QnA-KR: A Seedless Taxonomy-Driven Korean Instruction Corpus

We release GLAN-QnA-KR, a 303,581-row openly redistributable Korean instruction-QA corpus produced via the seedless taxonomy-driven GLAN synthesis pipeline with Microsoft's Phi-3.5-MoE-instruct as the producer model (generation: 2024-12; release: 2024-12; licence: OpenRAIL). The corpus spans a flat taxonomy of 1,084 English-labelled disciplines paired with Korean question/answer text, a 100-900 difficulty scale, and a median of 313 question characters and 1,098 answer characters per record. Two properties are atypical for synthetic instruction data at this scale: (i) exact duplicate questions number only 1 in 303,581 rows and character-trigram near-duplicate clusters at Jaccard >= 0.9 number zero in a 5,000-sample probe, and (ii) a two-layer contamination audit against KMMLU, KoBEST (five sub-tasks), and HAE-RAE-Bench shows a maximum test-vs-corpus question-level character-trigram Jaccard of 0.163 with zero test items at Jaccard >= 0.7, and a maximum multilingual-E5 cosine of 0.901 with a single test item at cosine >= 0.90 and zero at >= 0.95, across 20,000 sampled GLAN questions and seven evaluation sets. At the time of release, this is, to our knowledge, the largest single-pipeline synthetic Korean instruction corpus verifiable on the Hugging Face Hub and the only Korean >=100k-row corpus built under a seedless taxonomy-driven protocol. This note documents the generation protocol, corpus statistics, the contamination audit, and the licensing boundary in a form suitable for downstream citation.

GPT-4 Is Too Smart To Be Safe: Stealthy Chat with LLMs via Cipher

Safety lies at the core of the development of Large Language Models (LLMs). There is ample work on aligning LLMs with human ethics and preferences, including data filtering in pretraining, supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning from human feedback, and red teaming, etc. In this study, we discover that chat in cipher can bypass the safety alignment techniques of LLMs, which are mainly conducted in natural languages. We propose a novel framework CipherChat to systematically examine the generalizability of safety alignment to non-natural languages -- ciphers. CipherChat enables humans to chat with LLMs through cipher prompts topped with system role descriptions and few-shot enciphered demonstrations. We use CipherChat to assess state-of-the-art LLMs, including ChatGPT and GPT-4 for different representative human ciphers across 11 safety domains in both English and Chinese. Experimental results show that certain ciphers succeed almost 100% of the time to bypass the safety alignment of GPT-4 in several safety domains, demonstrating the necessity of developing safety alignment for non-natural languages. Notably, we identify that LLMs seem to have a ''secret cipher'', and propose a novel SelfCipher that uses only role play and several demonstrations in natural language to evoke this capability. SelfCipher surprisingly outperforms existing human ciphers in almost all cases. Our code and data will be released at https://github.com/RobustNLP/CipherChat.

CIPHER: Cybersecurity Intelligent Penetration-testing Helper for Ethical Researcher

Penetration testing, a critical component of cybersecurity, typically requires extensive time and effort to find vulnerabilities. Beginners in this field often benefit from collaborative approaches with the community or experts. To address this, we develop CIPHER (Cybersecurity Intelligent Penetration-testing Helper for Ethical Researchers), a large language model specifically trained to assist in penetration testing tasks. We trained CIPHER using over 300 high-quality write-ups of vulnerable machines, hacking techniques, and documentation of open-source penetration testing tools. Additionally, we introduced the Findings, Action, Reasoning, and Results (FARR) Flow augmentation, a novel method to augment penetration testing write-ups to establish a fully automated pentesting simulation benchmark tailored for large language models. This approach fills a significant gap in traditional cybersecurity Q\&A benchmarks and provides a realistic and rigorous standard for evaluating AI's technical knowledge, reasoning capabilities, and practical utility in dynamic penetration testing scenarios. In our assessments, CIPHER achieved the best overall performance in providing accurate suggestion responses compared to other open-source penetration testing models of similar size and even larger state-of-the-art models like Llama 3 70B and Qwen1.5 72B Chat, particularly on insane difficulty machine setups. This demonstrates that the current capabilities of general LLMs are insufficient for effectively guiding users through the penetration testing process. We also discuss the potential for improvement through scaling and the development of better benchmarks using FARR Flow augmentation results. HERITAGE: An End-to-End Web Platform for Processing Korean Historical Documents in Hanja

While Korean historical documents are invaluable cultural heritage, understanding those documents requires in-depth Hanja expertise. Hanja is an ancient language used in Korea before the 20th century, whose characters were borrowed from old Chinese but had evolved in Korea for centuries. Modern Koreans and Chinese cannot understand Korean historical documents without substantial additional help, and while previous efforts have produced some Korean and English translations, this requires in-depth expertise, and so most of the documents are not translated into any modern language. To address this gap, we present HERITAGE, the first open-source Hanja NLP toolkit to assist in understanding and translating the unexplored Korean historical documents written in Hanja. HERITAGE is a web-based platform providing model predictions of three critical tasks in historical document understanding via Hanja language models: punctuation restoration, named entity recognition, and machine translation (MT). HERITAGE also provides an interactive glossary, which provides the character-level reading of the Hanja characters in modern Korean, as well as character-level English definition. HERITAGE serves two purposes. First, anyone interested in these documents can get a general understanding from the model predictions and the interactive glossary, especially MT outputs in Korean and English. Second, since the model outputs are not perfect, Hanja experts can revise them to produce better annotations and translations. This would boost the translation efficiency and potentially lead to most of the historical documents being translated into modern languages, lowering the barrier on unexplored Korean historical documents.
